"Written by a ten-year veteran of the iconic magazine, Elise McDonough, the cookbook is humorous yet educational and compassionate yet still strongly counter-culture, as befitting the magazine's 40-year legacy. For those people who require medibles in their own lives or make them as part of underground compassionate care groups...the book is a highly useful tool." -Houston Press

"Veteran High Times writer McDonough offers this sampler of 50 mind-fogging munchies. There is probably no correlation between the known effects of marijuana and the fact that it has taken this classic counterculture magazine 38 years to get around to publishing a cookbook. Still, when an acknowledgement page credits folks with names like Evan Budman and Easy Bake Dave, one can almost smell the laid-back vibe emanating from this collection of "stoner-style cuisine." The 12-page introduction includes a brief paragraph on what to do should one's meal consumption result in a "total freak-out," but, more importantly, brings home the point that weed's active ingredients are fat-soluble and at their potent peak when in an oily blend. Thus, before launching into the creation of some ganja guacamole, Texas cannabis chili, or Pineapple Express upside-down cake one should whip up one of the spreads presented in the first chapter, such as cannabutter or cannabis-infused mayonnaise. Proper respect is paid to the classic pot brownie, with a page devoted to its history and a recipe involving a double boiler and much stirring. A section on cocktails gilds the lily with offerings like the Jamaican me crazy, which calls for cannabis-infused dark rum. But the book's highlight is its chapter of holiday fare, featuring a THC turkey injected with a "magic marinade" that, in conjunction with tryptophan, could mellow out the harshest of family Thanksgivings."

"The way Julia Child brought French cuisine to the uncultured American masses in her debut cookbook 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking' is what Elise McDonough and the editors at High Times Magazine have done with 'The Official High Times Cannabis Cookbook'. Informative and accessible, it's an essential staple for any 'budding' chef. Starting with a wide range of basics that bind THC to fat molecules (cannabis-infused butters, oils and tinctures plus bonus mayonnaise and flour recipes), the book ventures offers easy-to-prepare recipes that will have even the sober drooling (the photographs help). Highlights include 'Cheeto Fried Chicken' from Fresh Off the Boat author and chef Eddie Huang, a Thai-style Tom Yum 'Ganja' soup, a Thanksgiving turkey with a marijuana-infused marinade, and even latkes."

- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2015I already knew a couple good recipes I learned from friends, but this has a good variety for how small the book is, like Snoops Hot Dog recipe and the basic recipes for butter and tinctures, I wish all the tinctures would be listed in one section the alcohol ones are near the end around Pg. 153 if I remember correctly and the Glycerin ones around Pg. 40. I have used several of the recipes like the butter, fudge, and tincture recipes and all has worked well. Good book to have if you want to try some new things out or have a reference.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2013After reading through the book I was very impressed. Not only does it give you individual dish recipes, but it also gives you recipes for oil preparations (or the base materials used within the dish recipes). This is worth every penny simply from an information standpoint (I have yet to make a single dish as of yet). It also approaches the reader with the concept of understanding how you will measure for "dosage". This is imperative if you are sensitive to powerful, concentrated cannabis preparations.
To get a little more insight to the book, check out the High Times report from the Denver Medical Marijuana Cannabis Cup from MunchieMinute. It has an interview with the author between 1:05-4:20.[Amazon won't let me link it... sigh...]

- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2017I am a teetotaler, I don't drink, smoke or do drugs, but I also have no problem with other people doing whatever they want with their own bodies. I also consider myself to be a fairly competent chef, and combined with the fact that this book was only $3, I thought it might be an interesting read. Additionally, my grandfather died from wasting syndrome secondary to pulmonary fibrosis; had medical marijuana been available he probably would have lived several years longer and I'd have likely needed to learn how to prepare medicinal edibles.
And I did learn quite a bit from this book. I'd always assumed you just chopped the stuff up and tossed it into the batter or whatever the same way you would use oregano. Boy was I ever wrong.
The introduction contains technical information, such as differences between marijuana and hemp, differences between ingesting and smoking pot, chemical composition, etc, that helps you understand exactly what you're trying to accomplish in the first chapter.
The first chapter of the book is the basic recipes, such as THC oil, cannabutter, tinctures, glycerites, marijuana flour, etc. This is the most important and most useful section of the book. Much like the five French mother sauces, once you've figured out how to make these base items, the rest of the book is pretty much the same as any other cookbook. In fact, you could probably adapt just about anything you'd find in the Joy of Cooking by replacing the oil or butter with an infused version.
Whether you're in need of medicine or just wanting to enjoy some herbal refreshments, this book is a great place to learn the basics.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2012I bought this for a foodie for Christmas and this was right up his alley. Very intricate recipes and beautiful pictures inside the book so if you know a stoner with a knack for cooking this is a great gift. There's many different recipes more than the usual baking cookies and brownies. I don't know how anything tastes but I will have them fill me in once they try a few which I'm sure they will. 5 stars for the quality of the book nicely done.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2016I love this book! So many great recipes! I haven't tried making them all but I have read it cover to cover. I also made brownies from it and they were amazing! It has a bunch of other great methods of extraction. It also has some info about the history of many different kinds of cannabis edibles. I can't wait to try all of them'
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2018Great cookbook, especially for a beginner. Gives you recipes for infused olive oil, butter and tinctures, even flour! I have made most of the recipes in this book and some are them are little odd, like peanut butter filled jalapenos! Haven't tried them yet but I am sure they are a great combo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfekt
Sehr hochwertiges Kochbuch.
